Why a score comes back Unknown
Missing base data (country/MCC) and how to fix it.
Unknown is not a risk tier. It doesn't mean the entity is safe, and it isn't the same as
Green. It means Salescheck.io didn't have enough data on the record to check
it against anything at all. Never treat an Unknown result as a clean bill of health.
Why it happens
A score comes back Unknown only when a record has none of the base fields scoring needs: no country, no MCC, and no NAICS code — and also no company name or wallet address to run a 3rd-party lookup against. With nothing to check, there is literally no rule or provider signal that could fire, so returning a color would be a false signal of safety rather than an honest result.
Common causes
- The CRM record has no
countryfield filled in. - The record has no MCC or industry/NAICS classification set.
- The record also has no company name or wallet address on file, so there's nothing for a connected 3rd-party provider to look up either.
- A newly created or partially-synced CRM record that hasn't had its fields populated yet.
How to fix it
- Fill in the missing field(s) on the CRM record — even just a country is enough to move a record out of Unknown and into your country rules.
- If the record has a company name or wallet address but nothing else, connect a matching 3rd-party provider so that field actually gets checked. See 3rd-party data sources for what's available and how to connect one.
- Use the Score tester with the field filled in to confirm the record now produces a real tier.
Unknown results still show up in the Audit log like any other score
— if you're seeing a cluster of them, it's usually worth checking whether a CRM field mapping is missing
country or industry data on import, rather than fixing records one at a time.
